Book Review- Coming Soon "Shanghai Girls" by Lisa See

about this book.
In 1937, Shanghai is the Paris of Asia, a city of great wealth and glamour, the home of millionaires and beggars, gangsters and gamblers, patriots and revolutionaries, artists and warlords. Thanks to the financial security and material comforts provided by their father’s prosperous rickshaw business, twenty-one-year-old Pearl Chin and her younger sister, May, are having the time of their lives. Though both sisters wave off authority and tradition, they couldn’t be more different: Pearl is a Dragon sign, strong and stubborn, while May is a true Sheep, adorable and placid. Both are beautiful, modern, and carefree . . .

Book Review -Fatal Loyalty

Fatal Loyalty: A NovelFatal Loyalty: A Novel by Sue Duffy

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book was very good! It was my 1st "First Reads" win which was very exciting for me in & of itself *Thank you Kregel Publishing!

This suspenseful story takes place in my stomping grounds, Florida with mystery, intrigue, drug dealers, family secrets, and even love. Andie is hiding out while her father, Tony is running for office to put a stop to the biggest drug lords and conspiracy in the state. The bad guys go after what they know will stop Tony in his tracks, his daughter. She tries to run, but she can't hide among the palm fronds for too long as not every one is exactly as they seem. Through plot twists & turns, the many characters are faced with the struggle of right & wrong, see for yourself which shall prevail...

It's definitely worth the read for ALL ages. I love the fact that it's very "clean" without any foul language or sex scenes - It's considered Christian, but isn't heavy on scripture or religion.

Book Review -Redeeming Love

Redeeming LoveRedeeming Love by Francine Rivers

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book was amazingly good! The story is set in the 1850's in California, about a beautiful woman who was given a poor hand very early in life & survived the only way she knew how. She marries a Godly man who saves her & teaches her a whole new life of relationships, love & forgiveness. She becomes uncomfortable & runs away, right into the demons of her past, where she eventually finds her true savior all along. I highly recommend this book & will treasure it's lessons for a long time to come!

Biggest Book Chain Up for Sale!

Biggest U.S. Book Chain Up for Sale
Published: August 3, 2010

In what might be the latest sign of trouble for brick-and-mortar bookstores, the mega-chain Barnes & Noble announced on Tuesday that its board was putting the company up for sale.

Gene J. Puskar/Associated Press
Barnes & Noble has tried to compete with Amazon and Apple in the e-reader market by opening its own e-bookstore last summer, and by introducing its own device, the Nook.

A Barnes & Noble in New York City. The 720-store chain has been pressured by online retailers, e-book sales and shareholders.
The news surprised analysts and alarmed publishers, who have watched as the book business has increasingly shifted to online retailers and e-book sales, leaving both chains and independent sellers struggling.

Barnes & Noble, the country’s largest book chain with 720 stores, said that its board believed the stock was “significantly undervalued” and that it had set up a special committee to review its options.

“Barnes & Noble has an iconic brand and unique competitive advantages we believe will position the company to succeed over time in a rapidly changing market,” the board said in a statement. “The board is confident in Barnes & Noble’s strategy and fully supportive of the senior management team, which is delivering explosive growth in our fast-developing digital business.”...more

"Talking to the Dead" -Grove

Talking to the DeadTalking to the Dead by Bonnie Grove

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Sometimes we don't see those giant red warning flags because they're just too unbearably painful to deal with. For Kate they turned into gaping holes in her memory in the months leading up to her husbands' untimely death. Seeking help she meets some quirky (& comical) characters, but finds friendship, hope, & love in unexpected places. The gaping holes are slowly filled in, and a painful story of betrayal is revealed. For me this book was about dealing with past hurts, healing the wounds, and starting over fresh. Moving forward to new possibilities & not living & rehashing past pains into our present lives today. This book inspires me & holds a place in my heart.

"Salvaged" -Miller

SalvagedSalvaged by Stefne Miller

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This is an amazing book about a girl that loses mother & best friend in one instant. It's about life, loss, love, living, boundaries, hope, forgiveness, God and so much more. I didn't want the book to end and it seemed like the characters were my best friends and family. This is a YA read for the young and young-at-heart!

"This Side of Heaven" -Kingsbury

This Side of HeavenThis Side of Heaven by Karen Kingsbury

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book is so good! It taught me that being successful in the eyes of the world, may not necessarily be considered successful to God. Only God sees all that we truly and do.
It also reminded me to tell my family & friends that I love them often because life is fragile and without guarantees. At the end of the book, the author shares her inspiration for the book, and it just touched my heart so deep. You'll just have to read it for yourself!

This is my favorite classic! It was a bit racier than I expected for its time! It took me a while to adapt to the old language & grammer, but once I did, I LOVED it! It's a must read!

"So You Don't Want To Go To Church Anymore"

So You Don't Want to Go to Church AnymoreSo You Don't Want to Go to Church Anymore by Wayne Jacobsen

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book was great! I'd give it 4 1/2 stars if I could!
Even though it is a work of fiction, I was skeptical about reading it, thinking it would attempt to talk me out of going to church. Surprisingly, it brought up many valid points that some decisions based on the needs of the church as a building may interfere with the best interests of its members or God. It also made me think a lot about what we, as a society, teach our children.
I took away so many amazing messages from this book & haven't been able to stop thinking about it since I read it about a month ago. See for yourself!
